Amazon.com Review

Big, institutional investors have long known that picking the right stocks and bonds can be less important to the health of their portfolios than finding the right mix of asset types–stocks large and small, bonds short-term and long. Asset allocation largely determines a portfolio’s likely rate of return and level of risk. In Outperforming the Market, money manager John Merrill investigates the long-term historical performance of various asset classes to help individual investors discover the best ways to divvy up their money for market-beating returns with below-average risk. Looking back, Merrill concludes that many popular investments have not been worth their risk, including long-term Treasury bonds and foreign stocks trading in local currencies. The best risk-adjusted returns have come from U.S. stocks large and small, 30-day Treasury bills, and 5-year Treasury bonds. Merrill shows how to use index and actively managed mutual funds to build portfolios apportioned among these assets according to various investor time horizons and levels of risk aversion. Not the most exciting approach to investing, Merrill’s method requires consistency and discipline, the ability to do nothing while a particular mix of assets underperforms, as any mix sometimes will. If the past is prologue, however, investors able to follow Merrill’s advice will be able to buy their excitement elsewhere. –Barry Mitzman
